Propylene Glycol (IUPAC name: propane-1,2-diol) is a viscous, colorless liquid, which is nearly odorless but possesses a faintly sweet taste. Its chemical formula is CH3CH(OH)CH2OH. As it contains two alcohol groups, it is classed as a diol. It is miscible with a broad range of Solvents, including water, acetone, and chloroform. In general, glycols[5] are non-irritating and have very low volatility.

Its most important end use is in the production of unsaturated polyester resins that, in turn, gointo items that effect our daily lives, like water tanks, or our leisure time, like sailing boat. 

Propylene glycol has good solubility, low toxicity and irritation, and is widely used as injections (such as intramuscular injections, intravenous injections) and non-injection pharmaceutical preparations (such as oral liquids, ophthalmic preparations, otic preparations, dental preparations, rectal and vaginal preparations) It is a better solvent than glycerin and can dissolve many substances such as corticosteroids (sex hormones), chloramphenicol, sulfonamides, and barbituric acid. Salt, reserpine, quinidine, dehydrocorticosterone acetate, tetrahydrofuran sulfate, nitrogen mustard, vitamin A, vitamin D, many volatile oils, most alkaloids, and many local anesthetics. As a bacteriostatic agent, propylene glycol is similar to ethanol, and its efficacy in inhibiting mold is similar to that of glycerin and slightly lower than that of ethanol. Propylene glycol is commonly used as a plasticizer in aqueous film coating materials. An equal-amount mixture with water can delay the hydrolysis of certain drugs and increase the stability of the preparation. 15% to 30% propylene glycol solutions and semi-solid preparations can be used as antibacterial preservatives, about 15% propylene glycol topical preparations can be used as moisturizers, 10% to 30% propylene glycol aerosol solvents, 10% to 25 % of propylene glycol oral solutions, 10% to 60% of injectable preparations, and 5% to 80% of topical preparations are used as solvents and co-solvents.

It can be obtained by hydrolysis of propylene oxide: CH3CHCH2+H2O[H+]→CH3CH(OH)CH2OH Direct hydration method Propylene oxide and water are mixed at a molar ratio of 1:15, and reacted at 150~200℃ and 1.2~1.4MPa for 30 minutes , an aqueous solution containing 16% propylene glycol is obtained, and the finished product is obtained by evaporation and distillation. The catalytic hydrolysis reaction is carried out under the catalysis of sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid. Add 0.5% to 1.0% dilute sulfuric acid to 10% to 15% propylene oxide aqueous solution, and hydrolyze at 50 to 70°C; the hydrolyzate is neutralized, concentrated under reduced pressure, and refined to obtain the finished product.

It canalso be used as plasticizer, surface active agent, emulsifying agent and demulsifying agent, mould inhibitor, antiseptic for fruit, ice inhibitor and moisture preserving agent for tobacco.
