Dichloromethane is a colorless liquid, used as a reaction medium in the pharmaceutical industry for the preparation of ampicillin, hydroxybenzyl penicillin, cephalosporin, etc. It is also used as a solvent in film production, a wax remover in petroleum, a propellant in aerosols, an organic synthesis extractant, a foaming agent in polyurethane foam production, a metal cleaner, and more.
In the production of polyether-type urethane foam plastics, dichloromethane is used as an auxiliary blowing agent, as well as in the production of extruded polyaluminum foam plastics. It is also used in the production of decaffeinated coffee, where it is used to remove caffeine after the coffee beans have been steamed to dissolve and float the caffeine on the surface.
